Headphone Adapters

A USB-C headphone adapter is either a passive wire, which relies on the phone having an analogue mode most no longer support, or an active adapter containing its own digital-to-analogue converter. They look identical and cost similar amounts. Only one of them works on a modern phone.

Where it wins

Keeps good wired headphones usable. Active adapters often sound better than the old built-in jack. No battery, no pairing, no latency.

Where it costs you

Passive adapters fail silently on most current phones. Occupies the charging port. Easy to lose.

What to check

Buy one that explicitly states it contains a DAC. If a listing doesn't mention a DAC or a chipset, assume it's passive and won't work. Occupying the charging port also means no charging while listening unless you buy a splitter.
