Do blue light screen protectors actually work?

Blue-light protectors filter what they claim to filter. Whether that filtering does anything useful is a separate question, and the honest answer is that the evidence is weak and your phone already does the same thing for free.
What they do
A blue-light protector carries a tinted layer that absorbs part of the short-wavelength end of the visible spectrum, roughly 400 to 470 nanometres. The filtering is real and measurable.
The percentages quoted in marketing are usually measured at a single wavelength — often the absorption peak, which flatters them considerably. A protector advertising ninety percent blue-light blocking is typically removing a much smaller fraction of total blue output across the band.
What the evidence says
Research on screen blue light and eye strain hasn't established a strong effect, and systematic reviews of blue-light-filtering spectacle lenses have generally failed to find meaningful benefit for visual fatigue.
Sleep is more nuanced. Light exposure in the evening does affect melatonin, but the effect appears to be driven at least as much by overall screen brightness, viewing distance and what you're doing on the device as by the spectral composition. Reading something stressful at full brightness is the larger problem.
None of this means blue light is harmless or that people imagining benefit are wrong to want relief. It means the specific claim. That a tinted protector meaningfully improves sleep or eye comfort — isn't well supported.
The free alternative
Every current phone, tablet and laptop has a built-in night mode: Night Shift on iOS and macOS, Night Light on Android and Windows, Eye Comfort Shield on Samsung devices. All warm the display on a schedule.
They achieve the same spectral shift, they cost nothing, they can be scheduled to sunset automatically, and, critically. They can be turned off during the day when you want accurate colour. A tinted protector can't.
The practical downside
The tint is permanent and yellow. It's most obvious on white backgrounds, which is most of the web, and it makes photo editing or any colour-critical work unreliable.
On a phone used mainly for messaging this may not bother you. On a tablet used for photographs it will.
What to do
Try the software night mode first, for a fortnight, scheduled to come on in the evening. It costs nothing and it's reversible.
If you decide you want a hardware filter as well, buy one — but buy it understanding that you're choosing a permanent colour cast in exchange for a benefit that isn't well established, and prioritise the protector's other qualities rather than the blue-light claim.
Common mistakes
Overall brightness and what you're doing on the device appear to matter at least as much. Try the free software setting for a fortnight first.
The tint shifts white balance permanently. Use night mode on a schedule instead, so you can switch it off when colour matters.
