Why did my screen protector scratch so easily?
Sand and grit are harder than any consumer screen protector, 9H rating or not. A protector scratching is it doing its job. That scratch would otherwise have been in your display.
A scratched protector is disappointing, and it's also the product working exactly as intended. Understanding why the scratch happened tells you whether you bought badly or simply used the phone.
What is doing the scratching
The abrasive that marks phone screens is, overwhelmingly, silica. Sand, road dust, grit from a coat pocket and the fine material that collects in any bag are largely quartz, which sits at 7 on the Mohs mineral hardness scale.
Every consumer screen protector, and the display glass underneath it — sits below that. Quartz will scratch them. This isn't a quality problem that a better protector solves; it's a materials problem that no consumer product in this category solves.
This is also why the 9H rating on the box didn't help. Pencil hardness tops out well below quartz, so a 9H claim can't predict whether a protector survives a beach holiday.
Reframing what you're looking at
A scratched protector is a protector that worked. That mark is in a ten-pound sacrificial layer instead of in a three-hundred-pound display, and replacing it's the intended maintenance cycle rather than a product failure.
The comparison to make isn't against a protector that stays perfect, no such product exists, but against the same scratch being permanently in your screen.
When it genuinely is the product
Some protectors do scratch faster than they should, and there are two common causes.
Very cheap glass sometimes uses a thinner or softer surface treatment, and the top few microns matter disproportionately for scratch resistance. If a protector picked up visible marks within days of normal pocket use, that's unusually poor.
Hydrogel and TPU film are inherently softer than glass. They resist scratching less but self-heal light marks over a day or two, which is a genuinely different trade not a worse one. If you bought film expecting glass behaviour, the mismatch is in expectation.
What actually extends protector life
Move the phone to its own pocket. Keys and coins in the same pocket are responsible for the large majority of avoidable damage, and this single change does more than any specification upgrade.
Wipe the screen with a dry microfibre instead of a shirt. Fabric drags whatever grit is already on the surface across it, which is how fine circular scratching patterns form.
Don't use the phone at the beach without accepting the consequence. Sand is the worst-case abrasive and it gets everywhere.
When to replace
Replace when scratches start catching the light in a way you notice during normal use, or when any scratch reaches deep enough to catch a fingernail — at that point it can collect grit and start abrading the display beneath.
This is the argument for multipacks. A spare in a drawer means replacement happens the week you notice, rather than six months later.
Common mistakes
It's the intended maintenance cycle. Replacing a £10 sacrificial layer annually is the arrangement working as designed.
That drags the grit across the surface and cuts it. Rinse or blow the grit off first, then wipe.
