What does 9H actually mean on a screen protector?
9H refers to the Mohs-adjacent pencil hardness scale, where 9H is the hardest graphite pencil that won't scratch the surface. It's a marketing figure — nearly every tempered-glass protector claims it, and it says nothing about impact resistance.
Almost every tempered glass protector sold advertises 9H hardness, usually in the largest text on the packaging. It's one of the least useful numbers in consumer electronics, and understanding why tells you what to look at instead.
Where the number comes from
9H is a pencil hardness rating. The test is exactly what it sounds like: a series of graded pencil leads are drawn across the surface under a fixed load and at a fixed angle, and the rating is the hardest lead that leaves no mark. The scale runs from 9B at the soft end through HB in the middle to 9H at the hard end. 9H is simply the top of the pencil scale.
The confusion that makes it sound impressive
The number gets conflated, constantly and sometimes deliberately, with the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. On Mohs, 9 is corundum, sapphire and ruby, and 10 is diamond. A protector rated 9 on Mohs would be an extraordinary material.
It isn't that. Pencil 9H sits far below corundum. The two scales share a numeral and nothing else, and marketing copy that shows a protector next to a diamond is trading on a misunderstanding.
Why it fails to predict real-world scratching
The things that actually scratch a phone screen in a pocket or a bag are, overwhelmingly, silica. Sand, grit, road dust and the fine abrasive that collects in a coat pocket are largely quartz, which sits at 7 on the Mohs scale — comfortably above every consumer screen protector on the market and above the display glass beneath it.
That's why protectors still end up scratched after a beach holiday, and why a phone kept in a pocket with keys and coins accumulates fine marks regardless of the rating printed on the box. The pencil test tops out well below the hardness of the material doing the damage, so a 9H claim can't tell you whether your protector will survive the summer.
Hardness is also not toughness
A protector can be very hard and still shatter on a corner impact. Hardness resists scratching; toughness resists cracking; and in glass, pushing one up tends to pull the other down. A 9H badge says nothing at all about drop performance, which is the failure mode most people are actually buying protection against.
What it is reasonable to conclude
Treat 9H as table stakes. It tells you the product is tempered glass instead of film, and essentially nothing more, because virtually every tempered glass protector claims it. A specification that every product in a category shares can't be the thing that decides between them.
What to judge instead
Four things change your daily experience far more than the hardness badge. Whether an alignment tray is included, which decides how likely you're to fit it straight and dust-free. Whether the oleophobic coating is any good, which decides whether the surface smears permanently after a fortnight. Whether the cutouts are cut for your exact model, which decides whether it lifts at a corner. And whether the listing explicitly addresses your device's specific issue, fingerprint sensor compatibility, a curved edge, a Dynamic Island cutout.
None of those appear on the front of the box in large type. All of them matter more than 9H.
Common mistakes
Judge the oleophobic coating, cutout accuracy and whether an alignment frame is included. Those change your daily experience; the hardness badge doesn't.
